If I want to see if a red ball passes a ball next to it, I click on the red ball then press the space bar but all that happens is that the game freezes so I was wondering if I'm doing it right or if this is a bug?

Hi Nick,
You are doing it right and unfortunately, it seems that rendering the 3D surroundings on your video card fails. It's indeed a bug, the game should at least issue a warning or refuse to render that, it should not just freeze.
You can try setting the "Arena OFF" mode in Game Settings / Graphics (don't forget to click Save):
Then go back to the game and try the POV view (POV button or SPACE, CTRL-SPACE), which shall give you a screen like this:
